Rolling Stone Magazine
Rolling Stone magazine is one of those trendy little magazines you just have to read if you care at all about what's "in" and what's not in the wide world of music. Making it into the Rolling Stone magazine, even being briefly mentioned, is a sign that you've "made it" in the music world as a musician.
The Rolling Stone magazine name has been around for some years, and really made its mark during the latter 60's and 70's. During that strange time of tumultuous social changes and amazing music, Rolling Stone magazine rose out from obscurity and established itself as a collective voice for the generation. Famous journalists, such as Hunter S. Thompson, regularly contributed articles to the Rolling Stone magazine then, and it was as literary and intelligent as it was funny, creative, and indicative of current trends.
Rolling Stone magazine today isn't really what it used to be, although its still an extrememly popular magazine. Today, Rolling Stone magazine is more of an indication of trends and collection of reviews than it is anything else. Rarely do I see articles that even come close to the creative wit and intelligence of anything Hunter S. Thompson wrote for the magazine, though he was certainly one of a kind and a tough act to follow. More than just losing their former star journalists, Rolling Stone magazine has seemingly consciously decided to stay focused on the young and newest trends, and has all but forgotten its wilder roots.
This isn't necessarily a bad thing about Rolling Stone magazine, however. After all, music is still changing all the time, and its nice to have some idea of what's new and what's out there. I never pick up a Rolling Stone magazine expecting to read some mind blowing articles, but I do pick one up now and then to get a feel for the current direction new music is heading in, and maybe catch a few new bands to try out.
Another nice thing about Rolling Stone magazine is it also has reviews about movies, and sometime even videogames. The magazine is constantly changing to stay current with the newest bunch of college kids, more or less, but I think that it's just another sign that the magazine is moving with the times I suppose. I've heard the magazine critiqued for this before by older fans but its hard for me to feel surprised about a magazine called Rolling Stone changing a lot. As its title suggests, it's not really designed to gather moss.
