Health Safety Jobs
There are thousands of environmental health and safety jobs in all industries, and these jobs are an exciting and practical career path. Think about it, health safety jobs will never go away. As long as there are laws regulating food, worker safety, consumer goods standards, or environmental pollution, there will always be health safety jobs. And the best news is that it is easy to find health and safety courses at any community college which will prepare you for this exciting career path.
Actually, health safety jobs run in my family. My father is a risk assessment consultant. This is one of the most lucrative and rewarding health safety jobs there is. The reason for this is that you are not working for the government, as in most health safety jobs, but instead, are working for a private company. Other industries, often in construction, manufacturing, food preparation, or other high risk services, hire you to examine whether they are up to OSHA or other government health and safety standards, and to recommend changes to reduce their risks of accidents, sanctions, or fines. Although the cost of this service is hefty, they will gladly pay it because it is much better and much cheaper than receiving an expensive lawsuit or possible fine or even closure in the event of a surprise government inspection.
My mother has also been employed in health safety jobs for most of her life. She is currently working for The United States Department of Agriculture, or USDA. She inspects meat processing plants for a living, and boy does she have some stories to tell. The USDA is severely understaffed, although recently many health safety jobs have been created. Even still, inspections are so rare that companies are often caught unprepared for their inspections. When The inspectors do come, they sometimes find meat being prepared in conditions rife with danger and unsanitary squalor. Sometimes animal waste and animal meat are simply piled side by side in a manner that virtually guarantees contamination. Other times workers use machines that were supposed to be condemned decades ago, and risk losing life and limb on a daily basis!
When I heard my mothers stories, it made me consider health safety jobs seriously. Every year, children die of e. coli in tragic, and avoidable cases of contamination with animal fecal matter, and I would like to be part of insuring this doesn't happen any more. Whether I will work in the private sector like my father, or the public like my mother, I'm not sure, but I don know that health safety jobs are for me!
